GENERAL WRITING GUIDELINES
These are general guidelines. Each assignment for a class may contain specific requirements for your paper.
1. All papers must be typed. Standard 12 font, double spaced, no headers or footers, 1 inch margins on four sides. Attach a title page with your name, the name of the course, the time of your class, the topic of your paper, and the date. Attach any articles to the back (if assigned).
2. Academic papers require references. Always use quotations and cite your references using parenthetical citations. Example, (Smith, p.98). A bibliography or works cited page is needed only if requested in the assignment.
3. Academic papers are not personal opinion papers. Sure, your opinion counts, but only by demonstrating appropriate knowledge and analysis of the material. Do not write in first person unless the assignment calls for it. Make sure your work is substantiated by your resources, hence the use of quotations and reference citations.
4. Do not summarize your resources. Your papers should be focused and analytical, not a summary. Any conclusions should be based on the relative merits of the academic sources you have used.
5. If you have any questions regarding assignments or the writing of papers, contact me: [email protected] or [email protected]
